The shape of it
A clockwise loop: west to the spa country first, then south through Bohemia, east across Moravia, and home through the middle. Nothing over three hours behind the wheel, and the two longest legs are broken with stops worth making.
Built for short, flat walking
Everything below assumes under an hour on foot and no steep ground. Rock-scramble trails and hill climbs are out; viewpoint drives, chateau gardens, level colonnades, town squares and one wheelchair-gradient treetop ramp are in. Where a famous view needs a climb, I've noted the drive-up alternative.

The Karlovy Vary booking reversed the loop — for the better
Karlovy Vary sits in the far west, 230 km from where I'd previously put you on Sep 2. Rather than fight it, the whole route now runs clockwise: west first, then south, then east, then home through the middle. That turns what was an out-and-back into a genuine circle and cuts roughly 100 km of doubling back.
Every timing anchor survived the reshuffle: Vizovice still lands on Wednesday 16, the Znojmo festival still on Friday 11, Kroměříž still avoids the Monday closure, the flea market still on Sunday 20, and the car still comes back Monday 21 at noon.
Deciding on a second Karlovy Vary night while you're there
You said you'd call it on the ground, so here's the swap that keeps everything downstream intact. Add Sep 3 in Karlovy Vary → Krumlov becomes Sep 4–5 → Třeboň drops to one night, Sep 6. Telč onward is untouched, so the festival, the distillery and the car return all still work.
So book Krumlov and Třeboň on flexible, free-cancellation rates. Those are the two that would move. Everything from Telč east can be booked firm.
Other changes from the earlier drafts
Český ráj is out; Kutná Hora is in. Bohemian Paradise is a rock-trail destination — steps, ladders, uneven sandstone. With short flat walking it loses most of its point.
Vizovice moved to Wednesday 16 September, a day trip from Olomouc, because that's the only day the distillery runs a tour.
Svach's Old Well whisky moved from Třeboň to the Krumlov leg — it's at Svachova Lhotka in the Krumlov district, which I had wrong.
Krumlov drops from 3 nights to 2 to make room for Karlovy Vary — but it gains something: you're now there Thursday–Friday instead of across a September weekend in the most visited small town in the country.
The three fixed points
Car pickup
Europcar, Eliška Krásnohorské 134/9. A 700 m walk from Ventana. Office 09:00–15:30.
Jelínek distillery
The only tour that week. Walk-up, 200 CZK. Leave Olomouc 11:00.
Car return
Same office. Fill to full on the way in. Then you're on foot in Josefov.
September weather, and what it means
The numbers
- Week 1: highs 20–22 °C
- Week 3: highs 15–18 °C
- Overnight lows 8–12 °C throughout
- 50–60 mm rain across the month, usually passing showers
- Daylight 13½ h on Sep 1 → 12 h by Sep 22
Every leg has a wet-weather plan
Each day card carries an If it rains line — a distillery, a glassworks, a cellar, an underground passage, a museum or a cathedral.
The real hazard isn't rain, it's wet cobblestones. Czech old towns are uneven granite setts that get slick. Shoes with grip matter more than a rain jacket.
Day by day
Nine bases. Each card carries a live map of that leg's actual driving route — blue pins for waypoints, red for the destination, gold for day trips — plus what to do at short-walk pace, where to eat, and the rain fallback.
Prague — arrival
The evening
There isn't one. Between the flight and your partner's first-time EES biometric enrolment, you may not clear the airport until 21:30–22:00. Email Ventana your flight number so the room is held. Celetná is pedestrianised — the taxi drops you at the corner.
Wednesday morning, before the car
- 07:30 breakfast at the hotel
- 08:15 metro A to Jiřího z Poděbrad — the Jiřák farmers' market runs Wed–Sat
- 10:15 back to Ventana, check out by 11:00, leave bags at reception
- 11:40 collect bags, walk 9 minutes through Josefov to Europcar
- 12:00 pick up the XC90 · 12:15 drive west
Karlovy Vary
The useful accident of where you're staying
Chebská 394/44 is in Dvory, about 3 km west of the spa centre — and roughly 400 m from the Moser glassworks. That's a short flat walk, which on this trip matters. The colonnades are a 10-minute drive or a bus ride in. The hotel is on a main road with parking, so the XC90 is a non-issue here.
The afternoon, in order
- 14:15 arrive, drop bags
- 15:00 — Moser glassworks. Walk over. Hand-blown crystal since 1857, with a furnace gallery where you watch pieces being blown and shaped, plus a museum and showroom. This is the craft-and-antiques stop of the trip, and you can have a piece engraved
- 17:00 — The Home of Becherovka. The herbal liqueur was made in this building for over 140 years before production moved out in 2010. Becher family artefacts, historical bottles, and every tour ends in a tasting. Given you don't drink wine, this is your kind of place — and it's the one great Czech spirit that's neither slivovice nor whisky
- Evening — the colonnades. The Mill, Market and Castle colonnades run along the Teplá river on the flat. Buy a porcelain spa cup and drink the thermal water from the springs, which is what everyone else is doing. The Vřídlo geyser throws water roughly 12 m
Stay on the valley floor
The riverside promenade is level and easy. But Karlovy Vary is built into a steep valley, and the streets climbing away from the river are punishing — this is the one town on the itinerary where wandering uphill without thinking will cost you. If you want the view over the town, take the Diana funicular and let it do the climbing.
Eat
Breakfast is included at the Dvorana. For the local sweet: karlovarské oplatky, the thin spa wafers baked here since the mid-18th century, usually filled with hazelnut. Sold warm from small shops along the colonnades — buy them fresh off the iron, not boxed from a souvenir shop.
If it rains
Ideal, actually. Moser and Becherovka are both entirely indoors, and the colonnades are roofed — they were built for exactly this.
If you decide to stay a second night
Book Sep 3 as a separate reservation — your existing booking can't be date-changed. Then Krumlov becomes Sep 4–5 and Třeboň drops to one night on Sep 6. Nothing from Telč east moves. With the extra day: Loket castle in the morning and the Diana funicular plus a spa treatment in the afternoon.
Český Krumlov
The drive down is a day in itself — pick one, not both
Loket, 12 km south of Karlovy Vary: a Gothic castle on a tight river meander, often described as Český Krumlov in miniature. Compact, and 90 minutes covers it. Do this on the way out of town at 09:00.
Plzeň, 80 km further: Pilsner Urquell, the brewery that invented pale lager in 1842 and gave the world the word pilsner. The tour runs about 100 minutes and ends in the historic cellars with unfiltered, unpasteurised beer straight from the barrel. Tempting given how much of this trip is beer — but Loket and Plzeň and 230 km makes for a long day. Loket is the gentler choice; Plzeň is the better one.
Why weekdays here is a win
The Karlovy Vary booking pushed this leg to Thursday–Friday. That's a genuine improvement — you were previously here across a full September weekend in the most visited small town in Czechia. Do the castle at 09:00 Friday and you'll nearly have it to yourselves.
Short flat walking
- Lipno treetop walkway — 675 m of elevated boardwalk on a gentle spiral ramp, no steps, wheelchair-accessible gradient. The single best-suited attraction on the whole trip for you
- Castle courtyards and cloak bridge — the famous views are from level terraces. The tower is 162 steps; skip it, the bridge view is better anyway
- Zlatá Koruna monastery — flat cloisters, park at the door
Whisky
Svach's Old Well at Svachova Lhotka, ~10 km north of Krumlov on the České Budějovice road. Czech single malt, double-distilled on a still the owners designed themselves after studying in Scotland, first release 2015. Shares a site with the Glokner brewery at the Svachovka resort — beer for you, whisky for her. Contact ahead, it's small.
Eat
The centre is tourist-priced. Hospoda Na Louži is the honest room. Ask your hotel which village pub is cooking well that week — it changes, and they'll know.
If it rains
Egon Schiele Art Centrum · Vyšší Brod monastery library · Eggenberg brewery tour · the castle's baroque theatre (limited tours, book).
Třeboň
Why here
Your answer to "seafood." Czechia is landlocked, so the real tradition is freshwater — and Třeboň is its capital, a 16th-century landscape of engineered fishponds. Třeboň carp holds EU protected geographical status.
Market — Saturday 5 September
You leave Krumlov on Saturday morning. The farmers' market on Náměstí Svornosti runs then — catch it before you drive the hour east. It's an easy morning, given how short the leg is.
Short flat walking
- Rybník Svět dike — the full circuit is 12 km, but the stretch leaving town is flat and gravelled. Walk out 20 minutes, turn around. Best light in the first hour after sunrise
- Třeboň old town — small, walled, level. Square to chateau is five minutes
- Schwarzenberg tomb at Domanín — park at the gate, level path through the park
Eat
- Šupinka, Valy 56 — 2026 Michelin Bib Gourmand. Order the kapří hranolky, carp chips with mushroom-dill sauce. Book +420 384 721 149
- Your nights are Sat–Sun, so Šupina (the terrace room) should also be open — it appears to run Fri–Sun in shoulder season. Either works this time
Beer
Bohemia Regent — brewing in Třeboň since 1379, one of the oldest in the country. Tours daily, and the perfect wet-afternoon default.
If it rains
Bohemia Regent brewery tour · the chateau interiors · a peat bath at Bertiny lázně.
Telč & Slavonice
The drive is the attraction
Take route 154 via Slavonice rather than the fast road. Rolling Vysočina highland, almost no traffic. Break it in Slavonice — Renaissance sgraffito facades, restored after wartime damage, and a square you'll have largely to yourselves.
Short flat walking
- Telč square — a single level arcade of pastel Renaissance gables. Photographically the finest square in Czechia. Shoot it at 07:00 with nobody in it. Ten minutes of walking, and that's the whole attraction
- Telč chateau park and ponds — level, short loop
- Slavonice square — same idea, smaller, quieter
Monday 7 Sep is an arrival day — and state monuments close Mondays
No loss. Do the Telč chateau on Tuesday 8, your full day.
Eat & drink
Besídka in Slavonice — guesthouse, restaurant and its own microbrewery in one building on the square, founded in 1990 by people from Prague's Sklep theatre. Worth the stop for lunch even if you sleep in Telč.
If it rains
Telč chateau interiors · Slavonice underground passages · Jihlava catacombs, 45 minutes away.
Valtice & Mikulov
Reweighted away from cellars. The landscape, the history and one very good restaurant carry this leg.
Short flat walking
- Lednice chateau park — 300 km² of designed landscape, the largest in Europe. Level gravel paths, a greenhouse, a minaret in the trees, the Janův hrad folly. There's a boat along the Dyje if you'd rather sit than walk
- Mikulov Jewish quarter — seat of the Moravian Chief Rabbi for roughly three centuries; the old cemetery is among the most significant in Central Europe. Give it a proper morning. The cemetery is on a slope; the synagogue and Jewish street are level
- Reistna colonnade above Valtice — drive up, park, walk 100 m. Sunset over the whole landscape without the climb
Svatý kopeček is out
30 minutes of steady uphill on rough ground. The Mikulov chateau terrace gives a comparable Pálava view for a level five-minute stroll from the car park.
Znojmo — Friday 11 September
The Historické vinobraní runs 11–13 Sep. Znojmo's version is more historical pageant than drinking festival: a parade led by King John of Luxembourg, fencing displays, a large craft market. Good crowd-watching stone cold sober. The town also has kilometres of medieval underground passages and protected-origin Znojmo gherkins.
ESSENS, Hlohovec — book today
Wed–Sat only. Two seatings: 18:00 and 19:30. All three of your nights qualify. Reserve online · +420 730 575 555
Market
Saturday 12 Sep — catch the Mikulov morning market before you drive east.
If it rains
Znojmo underground · Lednice chateau and greenhouse · Mikulov chateau and its giant wine barrel · the Salon vín cellar under Valtice chateau.
Kroměříž & Wallachia
Do the chateau Saturday or Sunday
The Archbishop's Chateau and both UNESCO gardens are shut Monday 14. Keep Monday for Rožnov, which opens daily.
Short flat walking
- Květná zahrada (Flower Garden) — a formal baroque parterre, entirely level, geometric, one of the most photogenic things in Moravia
- Podzámecká zahrada — the landscape park below the chateau: flat paths, ponds, peacocks
- Wallachian Open Air Museum, Rožnov (~90 km) — relocated timber buildings, a working bakery, folk food. Level site, benches everywhere, do as much or as little as you like
- Petrov "Plže" — a lane of painted white wine cellars, five minutes of walking, a photograph you won't get elsewhere. It's on the drive in
Eat & drink
Hotel Černý Orel on the main square brews its own beer and runs a chocolate works and a beer spa — gastropub, brewery and bed in one building. Ask for tankové pivo.
If it rains
Chateau interiors and its underground cellars · Rožnov has plenty of indoor buildings · Velehrad basilica.
Olomouc & the distillery
The one mid-sized city worth keeping. 100,000 people, a student town, a UNESCO column in the main square, and restaurant quality at a third of Prague prices.
Wednesday 16 September — R. Jelínek, Vizovice
September tours run Wednesday and Friday at 14:00 only. Walk-up, no booking, 200 CZK per person, 60–70 minutes, three tastings included.
- 11:00 leave Olomouc — 85 km, 1h15 through the Chřiby hills
- 12:30 lunch in Zlín, Baťa's functionalist company town
- 14:00 tour: still house, museum, whisky and golden-slivovice maturation cellars, bottling line, tasting
- 15:30 shop — Gold Cock 12-year single malt and Hammer Head, the Cold War whisky, both mature here
- 17:00 back in Olomouc
Call first: +420 577 686 120. Their tour page still carries stale 2022 text saying tours are cancelled.
Short flat walking
- Horní and Dolní náměstí — two connected level squares with the Holy Trinity Column and the astronomical clock. Fifteen-minute circuit
- Loštice, 30 km north — the A.W. Tvarůžky Museum, home of Olomouc's pungent protected-origin ripened cheese. Factory viewing gallery, tasting, shop. Indoors and level
Eat
- Long Story Short Eatery & Bakery — 2026 Bib Gourmand
- Entrée at the Theatre Hotel — Michelin star, open kitchen, chef Přemek Forejt. Confirm opening days
If it rains
The tvarůžky museum · Archdiocesan Museum · Javoříčko caves · Velké Losiny hand paper mill, making paper by hand since 1596.
Kutná Hora
Why the swap
Bohemian Paradise is sandstone rock trails — steps, ladders, uneven ground. Kutná Hora gives you an entire UNESCO town on a compact, mostly level footprint, and cuts an hour off the final drive into Prague.
Break the drive at Litomyšl
A long arcaded Renaissance square, a UNESCO chateau, Smetana's birthplace, and a decent lunch. Flat, and roughly halfway.
Short flat walking
- St Barbara's Cathedral — the Gothic miners' church, approached along a level terrace lined with baroque statues. The classic view is from flat ground
- Sedlec Ossuary — the bone chapel. Small, indoors, level. Book a timed ticket; it's the one crowded thing here. It's 2 km out of the centre — drive, don't walk
- Italian Court — the royal mint, guided tour, level
- Czech Museum of Silver — above-ground exhibition only. The mine tour is a 250-step descent and a long crouching passage
Eat
Kutná Hora punches above its size — the streets below St Barbara's have several good rooms. It's also, unusually for Bohemia, a wine town.
If it rains
Almost everything here is already indoors. A good leg to have late in the trip.
Prague — the return
Still unbooked
Three nights, car for two of them. Look at Vinohrady or Karlín — garage rates run roughly €25–35/night, short tram to the centre, easy drive to the flea market.
Saturday 19
- Leave Kutná Hora 08:00, Prague by 09:15 — in time for the Náplavka riverside market, Saturday mornings only, April–November
- Or, more relaxed: Jiřák also runs Saturdays
Sunday 20 — the flea market
U Elektry, Vysočany. Largest in the country: 600+ sellers, 50,000 m². Opens 06:00, closes 14:00, 30 CZK entry. Antique furniture, Czech ceramics, vintage clothing, old books, Soviet-era curiosities. Drive there — exactly why keeping the car until Monday was worth it.
Afternoon: Nový Antik Bazar in Žižkov railway station — 3,000 m² of Art Deco, Functionalism, Baroque and Biedermeier, indoors.
Monday 21
- Fill to full, return the car by 12:00 at Eliška Krásnohorské
- You're on foot in Josefov at midday — the Jewish Quarter is right there
- Note: UPM and several Prague museums close Mondays. Plan streets and synagogues, not galleries
- Final dinner: Field, La Degustation or Eska. Book now
Tuesday 22 — departure
LY2522 departs 11:00, T1. Airport by 08:00 — El Al security is slow and EES exit registration adds time. Leave the hotel 07:15.

The scriptable map needs an internet connection. Here's a plain embedded map instead, and the full route below opens in Google Maps.
Why the links use coordinates
Google Maps was failing on Telč — the háček and the acute accent don't survive URL encoding reliably. Every route link in this file now uses latitude and longitude instead of place names, so nothing depends on diacritics resolving. The maps show place names as labels; only the underlying links are numeric.
Driving totals

Vignette
Fully digital, tied to the licence plate. Ask Europcar at pickup — Czech-registered rentals often include the annual pass.
If not: buy the 30-day at 480 CZK from edalnice.cz. You need it from day one — the Prague–Karlovy Vary run is motorway.
Food & drink
Opening days matter more than anything else here. Czech restaurants outside Prague close on days you wouldn't expect, and the good ones are small.

You're the only driver. Zero means zero.
Czech law is 0.0‰, enforced with routine roadside tests. No one-glass allowance, and a malé pivo at lunch is still a failure. With four distilleries and seven breweries now on the route, plan who tastes what: your partner drinks, you take the bottles home.
Order Kofola — the Czech cola, on tap in proper pubs, herbal and much less sweet than the American version. Also mošt, fresh-pressed apple juice, at every farmers' market — September is pressing season.
Regional things to actually eat
- Karlovarské oplatky — spa wafers, baked here since the mid-18th century, hazelnut-filled. Buy them warm off the iron
- Kapří hranolky — Třeboň carp chips, mushroom-dill sauce
- Olomoucké tvarůžky — protected-origin ripened cheese, pungent. Museum in Loštice
- Znojemské okurky — protected-origin gherkins, Znojmo
- Burčák — partially fermented young wine, September only. Not for the driver
- Svíčková, guláš, smažený sýr — the pub canon. Have them at a village hospoda, not in Prague

Where I could verify the official domain, it's here. Booking direct usually beats the aggregator on price and cancellation terms, and for the small country places it's often the only way to ask a real question.

Things you do not need
- International Driving Permit — your German licence is an EU licence, valid throughout the EU
- ETIAS for you — you enter on the Austrian passport
- A Vizovice booking — regular tours are walk-up, 200 CZK. Just call to confirm it's running
- Extra insurance at the rental desk — you've prepaid Full Coverage
- Prepayment for the Dvorana — you pay on arrival. Bring Visa or Mastercard; those are the only cards they take

Passports, borders & the car
Verify these live before you fly — I won't state them from memory
Visa rules and travel warnings change constantly and are safety-critical.
- IATA Travel Centre — select Israel as nationality for your partner
- NSC travel warnings (המל"ל) — blocks automated reading; open in a browser
- MFA travel recommendations
- ETIAS status — expected Q4 2026, so probably after your trip, but the date has slipped before
- Israeli passport renewal — appointments required
You two now cross borders differently
| Yuval — Austrian + Israeli | Partner — Israeli | |
|---|---|---|
| Leaving TLV | Israeli passport (mandatory) | Israeli passport |
| Entering Czechia | Austrian passport · EU lane | Israeli passport · all-passports lane |
| EES biometrics | Exempt — EU citizens aren't enrolled | Applies. Fingerprints + facial scan |
| ETIAS | Never | Once live — verify |
| 90/180 limit | Doesn't apply | Applies |
| Lost passport abroad | Austrian Embassy Prague, or any EU consulate | Israeli Embassy Prague — issues a laissez-passer, not a biometric passport |
Practical consequence on arrival, 1 September
You'll clear in about four minutes. She may take forty — first-time EES enrolment. Agree to meet at baggage claim rather than one of you hovering at the wrong barrier at 21:30. If you're married, she can accompany you through the EU/EEA lane as the spouse of an EU citizen — bring the marriage certificate.
EU citizenship does not give you healthcare
EHIC entitlement comes from being enrolled in an EU country's health system, not from holding its passport. Living in Israel, you almost certainly have no Austrian cover — and your kupah won't cover you meaningfully either. Buy travel insurance for both of you. Check the medical evacuation ceiling and complete the health declaration honestly. Don't pay for rental-car excess cover — your Full Coverage already handles the ~₪7,890 deductible.
The car — six things worth knowing
1 · It's a diesel
Czech pumps read nafta (diesel) and benzín (petrol). Full Coverage does cover misfuelling costs, but it will still ruin a day.
2 · The deposit card
€400 blocked at pickup. Must be a real credit card with the number printed on it, in Yuval's name.
3 · Decline the upsell
Say: "My booking already includes extended coverage, so I do not wish to purchase additional coverage."
4 · Name match
Licence, credit card and passport should all read the same. Transliteration mismatches between German and Israeli documents are what a difficult desk agent seizes on.
5 · It's 4.95 m long
Park outside the old towns in Loket, Krumlov, Telč, Slavonice, Mikulov and Kutná Hora and walk in. Karlovy Vary's Dvory district is easy; the spa valley is not.
6 · Office hours 09:00–15:30
Both your slots are 12:00, so you're fine. Don't drift.
Money & misc
- Czech koruna, not euro — but the Dvorana bills in EUR, so bring both
- Cards work almost everywhere; carry cash for flea markets, village pubs and farm stalls
- Refuse dynamic currency conversion — never let a terminal charge you in shekels
- Headlights on at all times, year-round, by law
- Chabad — Prague has an established presence; Karlovy Vary, Brno and Olomouc have contacts. Centre locator
